Microsoft plans to put all open source code on GitHub in “Doomsday Vault” in Svalbard. This was stated by GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.
For this task, the company uses ultra-resistant films that are coated with iron oxide powder. The film can be stored up to 750 years, and in a cold and dry cave up to 2000 years.
The first reel was placed on October 24, on which ~6000 important open-source projects were recorded. For example, the sources of Android and Linux operating systems.
In general, the company plans to place ~ 200 coils. Each of them will be ~120 gigs in size.
