Desktop in Windows is just a normal folder, located on the âCâ drive by default and everything you store on your desktop takes up space on that drive. If you use the desktop as the primary place to store files, this may lead to a lack of free space on the system drive.
In such a situation, moving the desktop folder to another drive may make sense. To do this:
- Open âExplorerâ and in the left pane or in the âQuick Accessâ section, right-click on the âDesktopâ folder. Select the âPropertiesâ option.
- In the properties of the folder, click the âLocationâ tab.
- click Move.
- Navigate to the new drive and/or new folder for the desktop and tap âSelect Folderâ. It is not recommended to use the root of the drive for the desktop files.
- Make sure that you have the right path in the âLocationâ window: all the desktop files and folders will be moved to that location. Click OK.
You will be prompted to move all the files from the old location to the new one. It is recommended that you do this if you do not plan to migrate manually from the old folder.
You will have to wait until the migration process is complete. This may take a long time, especially if you have been actively âstoringâ large files on the desktop. As a result, all the desktop files will be on the new drive in the folder you specified and will not take up space on the âCâ drive.
