Updated Chrome 76 bypasses required subscriptions
Google Chrome received an update under number 76 with a number of interesting innovations:
– Added install button in the address bar for PWA (progressive web applications).
– Flash blocking.
—Media query support for dark theme “prefers-color-scheme”.
— Removed a vulnerability in the FileSystem API that determined incognito mode.
The last point put a spoke in the wheel of those sites that provided limited free access to content on based on the hit count.
Such services, when incognito mode was detected, by default turned on content viewing restriction.
For example, a notification with a requirement to buy a subscription or register. An example is the site “The New York Times”.
Updated Google Chrome 76, such sites cannot detect incognito mode, so the restriction does not work and the content is displayed.
