Among the victims were such resources as BBC America, TechCrunch, 9to5Mac, 9to5Google, VentureBeat, Rolling Stone, The Sun, Metro UK, DroneDJ, Electrek, as well as the Facebook corporate blog, the Wikimedia Foundation and so on.
The developers at Automattic, the owner of WordPress.com, have already apologized for what happened on the
official blog and social networks. Although the company representatives did not go into details, they explained that the issue was caused by a “service outage” related to the VIP Go platform that works with commercial blogs WordPress.com. The developers explained the subsequent “redesign” of many large resources by the missing theme file. Site owners were asked not to update the sites or touch anything during the restoration work, and in the end everything was back to normal about three hours after the outage began.
All sites on VIP Go are back up and running. We're addressing any remaining issues on a per-site basis. If you notice any remaining issues, please update open tickets or email vip-support@wordpress.com if you haven't already done so.
