If the user is trying to hide data using encryption, then there must be something important in the file. Therefore, sometimes it is more important not so much to encrypt as to hide the very presence of secret information on the hard drive.
In such cases, steganography comes to the rescue. It allows you to hide a file in a picture or some unremarkable song without special knowledge and special efforts.
Steghide is a steganography tool that uses a passcode to hide private files inside an image or audio file. The utility hides the bits of a file with sensitive data in the bits of another file (with less significant information).
Image types are supported BMP and JPEG, as well as audio formats AU and WAV. By default, the file is encrypted using the Rijndael algorithm with a key size of 128 bits. The utility is implemented on Windows and Linux operating systems. Detailed installation instructions can be found in the repository.
Command “steghide embed -cf picture.jpeg -ef secretfile.txt” will hide the file “secretfile.txt” in the image “picture.jpg” . After you can delete the secret file and restore it if necessary from the image with the command “steghide extract – sf picture.jpeg”.
