Emails in Apple Mail on macOS are saved unencrypted
July 25, Bob Gendler discovered that emails sent via Apple Mail are stored unencrypted in the snippets.db database.
And even if the owner has enabled message encryption. The bug arose due to the Siri function, which provides information for communication at the request of the user.
It collects information from applications using suggestd and saves it in clear text to the snippets.db file. And even disabling Siri does not stop data collection.
After 100+ days, the problem is still present on macOS: Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina. Here are some tips to keep yourself safe:
1.
"System Preferences" ->"Siri" -> "Siri Suggestions and Privacy" -> Uncheck Apple Mail.2. In the terminal, you can enter the command to disable Apple Mail tracking:
defaults write com.apple.suggestions SiriCanLearnFromAppBlacklist -array com.apple.mail But these actions save from further tracking. Therefore, also delete the snippets.db file, which already stores information in the folder:
/Users/(LOGIN)/Library/Suggestions/
