Amazon has created its own operating system for mobile devices and set-top boxes. It is called Vega OS and, just like Android, it is built on the Linux kernel, but does not use Google’s developments.
Amazon will use it primarily in gadgets with weak hardware—those on which Android runs very slowly. This OS is functionally limited because it does not contain many of the components found in Android, and according to Amazon, this is justified, because they are not used on cheap devices.
Vega OS is not compatible with Android applications. Developers are encouraged to write projects that run as web applications or simple programs using the React Native framework that run outside of the browser. In the future, Amazon plans to transfer all its devices to Vega OS.
